5 Features of Thevetia Peruviana (Camalonga) Seeds
- Unique and rare seeds from the Peruvian Amazon
- Sold in pairs for collection and ornamental purposes
- Contains powerful cardiac glycosides
- Potential source of effective wound healing compounds
- Potential natural anti-cancer product
Native Use of Thevetia Peruviana Seeds
The Peruvian shamans incorporate yellow oleander (Thevetia peruviana) seeds into a drink called ‘camalonga’, along with other ingredients like aguardiente, camphor, white onion, and garlic. The drink usually contains two seeds, one male and one female. Cabalonga seeds are not the same as the Colombian cabalonga seeds, or cabalonga negra, which Colombian shamans prefer to use.
Although sometimes added to the ceremonial ayahuasca blend, there is no evidence that this is common practice in Peru. ‘Camalongueros’ are shamanic practitioners who specialize in the use of this ‘camalonga’ drink.
Habitat of Thevetia Peruviana
Thevetia peruviana is a subtropical shrub native to Mexico, but it has naturalized in many parts of the neotropics. It is widely cultivated throughout all tropical regions and tends to bloom year-round. This shrub produces beautiful flowers in a range of colors, including apricot, coral, yellow, white, and even tan.
People often plant this tree in family gardens or ‘chakras’ for its amazing yellow flowers, and its seeds are used to make rattles that are often used in music or shamanistic rituals. The leaves of Thevetia Peruviana may remind you of oleander, another evergreen shrub with five petals arranged in an attractive whorl.
Scientific Information
Thevetia Peruviana seeds, also known as cabalonga blanca, contain powerful cardiac glycosides like thevetin, thevetoxin, peruvoside, ruvoside, and nerifolin. These compounds are found throughout the plant but are more concentrated in the seeds.
Ingesting these seeds can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, increased blood pressure, dizziness, diuretic over-activity, and a variety of arrhythmias, which can be fatal. Chewing the seed causes a drying, numbing, or burning sensation in the mouth and throat. The sap of the plant can also cause skin irritation, sometimes blistering.
Despite the high toxicity of the plant, there is scientific evidence that Thevetia peruviana could be established as a potential source of effective wound healing compounds and as a ‘natural anti-cancer product’.
