The Science Behind Nukini Rapé
The base of this formula is Cecropia membranasea, commonly known as Yarumo in Spanish or Cetico in Brazil. The plant matter is rendered into a fine, pure white ash that contains flavonoids, steroids, and terpenes. Recent studies have shown that this plant has hypoglycemic, analgesic, anti-ulcer, and antimalarial properties.
The Nukini People
The Nukini tribe resides along the lush green banks of the Moa River in the northwestern part of Brazil. With a population of only 900 people, this small tribe has a unique language that comes from the Pano linguistic root. Their culture is in harmony with the biodiverse Amazonian surroundings. The Nukini women are responsible for gathering, selecting, formulating, and preparing the plants for medicines and handicrafts. The feminine power of the Nukini women is reflected in their Rapé blends, which contain a flowery and fresh fragrance that offers a wonderful sense of grounding and clarity.
Songs
Francisca Nuquini, the tribe elder who made this Rapé, has been gathering and preparing sacred plants for as long as she can remember. During our time with her, she shared the ancient secrets passed down to her from her grandmother about how to prepare the best Rapé. According to Francisca, there are three types of Rapé: aromatic, medicinal, and energizing. Each blend has its own recipe, which is a tribe secret that is only passed down to the women in her village. The power of their Rapé is in the songs they sing to the plants before harvesting them and the special manner in which each part of the plant is respected and cared for throughout the entire preparation process.
What is Rapé?
Rapé, pronounced ‘ha-pey’ in Portuguese, is a traditional snuff used by various indigenous tribes of South America, predominantly from Brazil and Peru. The fine powder is blown into each nostril through a bone or bamboo pipe called a ‘Tepi’ or ‘Kuripe’. Each tribe has its own Rapé formula, which is typically made in small batches according to the specific needs of the person being treated or the ceremony’s occasion. The use of Rapé aims to restore our connection to nature and a sense of grounding. It clears mental fog and confusion, eliminating negative thought patterns, and brings about physical and spiritual wellness.
