Huitoto Rapé: Experience Sweetness and Protection Against Evil
Indulge in the richness of Amazonian plants with Huitoto Rapé, a blend of two ancient cacao-related plants, Copoazú (Theobroma grandiflorum) and Macambo (Theobroma bicolor). The name Theobroma, given by Carolus Linnaeus, means ‘Food of the Gods,’ reflecting the divine essence of these plants.
Copoazú, the mother of sacred Cacao tree, is known for its delicious fruit pulp. Macambo, also known as the Jaguar Tree, produces nutty beans that are rich in protein, fiber, and serotonin compounds that boost mood. Together, these plants create a unique blend that brings sweetness to life and protection against evil.
The Huitoto Tribe
The Huitoto Tribe, scattered along the Colombian-Peruvian border in the Amazon forest, are the keepers of this sacred blend. They are mainly hunters and gatherers, with small home gardens. The Huitoto people were given cacao and sweet yuca by the creator, which they consider their medicine. The Tanimuca people taught them how to make and use Rapé, and they shared their mambe and Ambil. The Huitotos reunite with the Mucunas every night, sitting in front of the fire, to listen to the elders and share their elements.
What is Rapé?
Rapé, pronounced ‘ha-pey’ in Portuguese, is a traditional snuff used by various indigenous tribes of South America, predominantly tribal people from Brazil and Peru. Rapé blends contain a ground mixture of plants, tree bark, seeds, and ash. The fine powder is blown into each nostril through a bone or bamboo pipe called a ‘Tepi’ or ‘Kuripe.’ The Tepi applicator is a long blow pipe that connects the nostril of the receiver to the mouth of the person that administers the snuff. The Kuripe is for self-application, with a V-shaped applicator that connects the nostril to the mouth, allowing the snuff to be self-blown into the nose.
Each tribe has its own Rapé formula, with the selection, mixture, and grinding process regarded as a ritual to be performed only by a reputable healer. The snuff is typically made in small batches according to the specific needs of the person being treated or the ceremony’s occasion. The use of Rapé aims to restore our connection to nature, clear mental fog and confusion, eliminate negative thought patterns, and bring about physical and spiritual wellness.
