The Kanamari People

The Kanamari tribe lives in the lower Amazon region of Peru and Brazil, deep inside the Amazon Rainforest. The tribe has an estimated 2,800 members in Brazil and a deep, rich heritage that has lasted for generations. The Kanamari people believe they were created by Tamakori and possess natural healing methods, or curandeiros, as well as facial tattoos of the older generations. The tribe refers to themselves as Canamari or Tukuna, which means people.

What is Rapé?

Rapé is a snuff used by various indigenous tribes of South America, primarily in Brazil and Peru. It is blown into each nostril through a pipe called a Tepi or Kuripe, made from a hollow bone or bamboo. Each tribe has their own formula of plants, trees, seeds and other ingredients, combined with a pure form from the Amazon and an ash called tsunu or others like Murici, Yarumo, or Inga. The rapé is prepared in a ritualistic way by specific members of the tribe.

The use of Rapé is believed to facilitate the opening and clearing of the chakras, grounding and connection to the earth, release of disease from the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies and decalcification of the pineal gland. It also clears mental fog and negative thought patterns, expands our connection to the breath and connects us to Spirit.

Rapé is traditionally administered through either the Tepi or Kuripe. The Kuripe is used for self-administration, while the Tepi is used to blow the snuff for another person. The V-shaped applicator connects the nostril to the mouth, allowing the user to blow the rapé into the nose of the receiver.

Who Makes Kanamari Jaguar Tree Rapé?

Raimunda Kanamari, a 70-year-old woman, is one of the few elder women that keep the tradition of preparing the rapé. She combines her work of planting food for her family with growing magical plants and preparing medicine. Raimunda travels eight days downstream the Yavari river to reach the Brazilian city of Atalaya to exchange her medicines for yuca, bananas, salt and other products that are not available in the jungle. She goes every three months down the river to make this exchange and locals value her medicine very much.
