The Mimosa tree, also known as Jurema, has been used for centuries by indigenous groups in South, Central, and North America. The Aztecs used the inner Rootbark of the tree to treat skin burns and wounds, as well as to make tea. Mimosa hostilis/tenuiflora is also an excellent body paint or natural coloring agent for textiles, giving off an enchanting shade of purple when used as a dye.

Mimosa hostilis is a bushy tree that is indigenous to large parts of South America, with the species growing in regions as far north as Mexico. The tree is most commonly found in the tropical lowlands, up to 1000 meters above sea level, and is primarily located in Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. The tree can reach up to 8 meters and produces beautiful white flowers and green pods with seeds.
Mimosa hostilis has been studied by scientists for over 150 years, with much known about the tree’s natural healing properties. The species is used throughout the world as the subject of medical, pharmacological, preclinical, and clinical research, with promising results in skincare and regeneration. According to Laura Elizabeth Valencia-Gómez (2016), Mimosa hostilis has strong antifungal and antibacterial properties and can play a large role in the regeneration of human skin cells. Scientists are looking at the possibility of having Mimosa hostilis processed into films that can be applied to the skin for faster regeneration after wounds or burns have occurred. These regenerative effects are also one of the reasons that you see Mimosa root bark in an increasing number of skin cremes and other cosmetic products.
