Ecuadorian Artists: Hand-Carved for Perfection
Our pipes are all hand-carved by local Ecuadorian artists who have mastered the art of creating beautiful and functional smoking pipes. The top of the nut is carved into the shape of a bowl, and an inner passage through the nut is provided up to the mouthpiece. The wooden part of the pipe is made from Chonta wood, which was used by the Incas for making shields and weapons.
Resembles Ivory: Ethical and Sustainable
Tagua nuts are obtained from Phytelephas equatorials (elephant palm), an Amazonian palm tree. When they are dry, the hard, white tagua seeds look like ivory. As the character, density, and color of the seeds resemble that of ivory, the palm is referred to as elephant palm. In Ecuador, tagua seeds are skillfully carved into beautiful designs. These seeds can be polished just like ivory is polished.
Local people collect the pods without causing any damage to the trees. This type of sustainable harvesting may be done on a semi-annual basis for as many as 40 years. Tagua is a cash crop, and the person engaged in the collection of tagua seeds earns more per acre than what he or she can earn if the same land is used for other farming purposes. When consumers purchase tagua, they are actually encouraging good utilization of land and forest management.

The Science Behind Tagua Pipe – Opium
Tagua nuts, also known as vegetable ivory, have been used for centuries in South America for their ivory-like properties. The nuts are rich in cellulose and have a similar density and texture to animal ivory. However, unlike animal ivory, tagua nuts are a sustainable and ethical alternative. The harvesting of tagua nuts does not harm the environment or the animals that live in it. Additionally, the harvesting of tagua nuts provides income for local communities, which helps to support sustainable land and forest management practices.
Chonta wood, which is used to make the wooden part of the pipe, is a hard and durable wood that was used by the Incas for making shields and weapons. The wood is known for its strength and resistance to decay, making it an ideal material for smoking pipes.
